Supposedly the location where John the Baptist preached and where Jesus was baptised, Bethany Beyond the Jordan was part of the early Christian pilgrimage route that ran between Jerusalem and Mount Nebo.

Excavations began here after the Jordan-Israel peace treaty was signed in 1996, since then remains of over 20 churches, caves and baptism pools from roman and byzantine periods have been found.

In recent years the site has had many special visitors from all over the world including royalty, heads of state and religious leaders including Pope Francis in 2014.
